During the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and John Carlos defiantly raised their fists in support of black power. During the 2010 Jordan 4th Ward Olympics, Paige made an equally overt demonstration.
All the kids were invited to walk through the gym during the open ceremonies of last night's Olympic-themed ward party. Paige reluctantly followed her peers, unsure of what she was getting herself into.
When she entered the gym with her construction-paper-and-drinking-straw flag, she walked right to center court and, in one smooth motion, ripped the paper from its base and threw the stick on the floor. She then walked right out the other door.
When she came back to our seats, we didn't she immediately told us about her protest. "I ripped my flag and threw it on the floor," she said matter of factly.
"Why did you do that?"
"Because I don't like being in parades."
Noted.
